As the year 2024 winds down, many individuals and businesses are rallying to support their favorite charities – whether through volunteering, donating, or fundraising in these final weeks. According to the 2023 M+R Benchmarks Report, Giving Tuesday and December 31 stand out as crucial fundraising days for nonprofits.
But for those of us who dedicate ourselves to nonprofit boards year-round, our contributions extend far beyond these peak times. From attending board meetings to mentoring Executive Directors, hosting events, fundraising and guiding governance efforts, the work we do as nonprofit board members is ongoing and impactful.
If you’ve been wondering how your nonprofit board experience can pave the way to a corporate board seat, you’re not alone. It’s a question many professionals ask me as they look to take the next step in their board journey. Here are three actionable ways to maximize your nonprofit board experience in preparation for corporate board opportunities in 2025:
1. Build Genuine Relationships with Fellow Board Members
Take time to connect with each board member through one-on-one meetings, either in person or via video calls. Many professionals serve on nonprofit boards for years without truly getting to know their peers. This is a missed opportunity.
Why? Board members often advance in their careers, and keeping in touch with them ensures you stay updated on their professional journeys. For example, one of my clients discovered that two of her fellow nonprofit board members were already serving on corporate boards. By strengthening her relationships with them, she not only expanded her network but also gained valuable advocates who vouched for her qualifications when she expressed her interest in corporate board roles.
2. Step Into Leadership Roles
Serving on a nonprofit board is valuable, but taking on a leadership position—like chairing a committee or the board itself—is transformative. Leadership roles help build your confidence, deepen your understanding of governance, and give you hands-on experience that translates well to corporate boards.
If you’re spread thin across multiple nonprofit boards, consider focusing on one where you can play a more active leadership role. Quality over quantity here. Developing expertise in governance through a leadership position can help you stand out when the time comes to pursue corporate board opportunities.
3. Align Your Board Service with Your Career Goals
Choose a nonprofit board that aligns with your professional or personal brand. When your nonprofit board aligns with your career, it positions you to network with like-minded professionals and elevate your profile.
For instance, one of my clients, a VP of Marketing, joined the American Marketing Association (AMA) board in Chicago in 2018. Her goal was to become a Chief Marketing Officer (CMO) within five years. By immersing herself in a network of ambitious marketing professionals, she gained invaluable mentorship and connections. Less than five years later, she achieved her goal, securing a CMO role through a relationship she built on the AMA board. C-suite titles significantly increase your chances of landing a corporate board seat, so think of your nonprofit board service as a stepping stone to broader career growth.
When pursuing a corporate board role, it’s crucial to showcase your experience strategically. Lead with your corporate board experience, followed by corporate advisory roles, any presentations or committee work you’ve done for corporate boards as an executive, and then your nonprofit board service. Presenting your qualifications in this order ensures you’re highlighting the most relevant experience for a corporate board audience.
Nonprofit board service is a fulfilling way to make a difference in your community while gaining valuable governance experience. And while these roles are often unpaid, they can open doors to opportunities you may not have imagined if you leverage them strategically.
Happy Holidays, and here’s to making 2025 the year you achieve your boardroom goals!
